Is Carnival a national holiday in Brazil?

Officially no. Carnival Monday and Tuesday (16–17 February 2026) are 'ponto facultativo' — optional days off declared for the federal public service — and only some states (such as Rio de Janeiro) make them official holidays. In practice most businesses close or work reduced hours, which is why this calendar shows them as optional days.

Why is 20 November a Brazilian national holiday?

Black Awareness Day (Dia Nacional de Zumbi e da Consciência Negra) became a national holiday through Law No. 14.759 of 2023, first observed nationwide in 2024. It honours Zumbi dos Palmares and falls on 20 November — a Friday in 2026, creating a three-day weekend.
