Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when a South African holiday falls on a weekend?

Under the Public Holidays Act, only Sunday holidays are substituted: the following Monday becomes a public holiday. In 2026, National Women's Day falls on Sunday 9 August, so Monday 10 August is also a holiday — while Human Rights Day (Saturday, 21 March) and the Day of Goodwill (Saturday, 26 December) get no substitute.

Is the 2026 municipal election day a public holiday?

It is expected to be. President Ramaphosa set the local government elections for Wednesday 4 November 2026, and election days are traditionally proclaimed public holidays under Section 2A of the Act. The formal proclamation had not been gazetted yet as of mid-2026, so the date is not in this calendar until it is official.
